Prepare for the PL-400 certification with smart practice

The PL-400 measures your ability to design, build, and troubleshoot Power Platform components that go beyond low-code configuration: custom business logic, system integrations, data conversion, process automation, complex Power Fx formulas, and Power Automate expressions. It's a developer-focused exam, not one for makers or functional consultants.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PL-400 exam hard?+

Yes — compared with other Power Platform certifications, it's the only exam on the path built entirely around a pro-code profile. Knowing how to use Power Apps or Power Automate as a maker isn't enough — you need real experience writing C# plug-ins, PCF components, custom connectors, and consuming Dataverse APIs.

How long should I study for the PL-400?+

It depends on your background. If you already work daily with Dataverse and code inside Power Platform, 4-6 weeks of focused review is usually enough. If you're coming from the maker/functional side and need to shore up C#/JavaScript and the platform APIs, planning for 8-12 weeks is more realistic.

How is the PL-400 different from the PL-200?+

The PL-200 (Power Platform Functional Consultant) tests low-code configuration: canvas and model-driven apps, flows, Dataverse from a maker's perspective. The PL-400 assumes you already have that down and focuses on extending the platform with code: plug-ins, integrations, PCF, Azure Functions, and APIs.

How much does the PL-400 exam cost?+

Pricing is set by Microsoft based on the country where you take it, and it's paid when you book through Pearson VUE. There's no single global rate, so it's worth checking the exact price during the booking step.

Does the PL-400 certification expire?+

Yes. Microsoft role-based certifications renew every 12 months through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn — no need to retake the full exam.

Can I retake the exam if I fail?+

Yes. After a first failed attempt you can retake it after 24 hours. If you fail again, Microsoft applies longer waiting periods for subsequent attempts.
