MLA-C02 is the updated version of the AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate exam. It validates that you can build, deploy, operate and maintain ML and AI solutions and pipelines on AWS, with both traditional models and foundation models: data preparation, training and tuning, RAG and knowledge bases, agents, CI/CD, monitoring, cost and security.

A legal services firm must assign each incoming document to one of 12 predefined practice areas. The firm has only a few hundred labeled documents, so the team wants to fine-tune a pretrained model through transfer learning instead of training from scratch. The team wants to use an Amazon SageMaker AI built-in algorithm. Which algorithm meets these requirements?

MLA-C02 is the updated version of the AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate exam. It replaces MLA-C01, whose last day in English was 28 September 2026, and has been in beta since 29 September. It validates that you can build, deploy, operate and maintain ML and AI solutions on AWS.
The big change is generative AI: besides traditional ML with Amazon SageMaker AI, the outline now includes foundation models, Amazon Bedrock, RAG and knowledge bases, agents and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, model evaluation and guardrails. The four domains are data preparation (28%), model development (24%), deployment and orchestration (24%) and operating, monitoring and securing solutions (24%).
Data: batch and streaming ingestion, data formats, AWS Glue, Feature Store, vector databases, embeddings, document chunking for RAG and bias control. Models: choosing between managed services, foundation models and custom training; hyperparameter tuning, fine-tuning and evaluation metrics for both classic ML and generative AI.
Deployment and operations: endpoint and inference types, containers, auto scaling, CI/CD pipelines, model registry, prompt management and agent deployment. Finally, drift monitoring, inference and token costs, least-privilege IAM, VPC isolation and Amazon Bedrock Guardrails.
The official MLA-C02 guide includes a comparison with MLA-C01: if you were studying the previous version, start there to see what was added. The beta is in English only, has 85 questions and 170 minutes, and results take longer to arrive than for a standard exam.
Start free to check your level. CertifyDeck questions follow the exam format: multiple choice with one correct answer and multiple response with two or three, always with a scenario and its requirements.

MLA-C02 keeps four domains but adds generative AI to all of them: foundation models, Amazon Bedrock, RAG, agents, evaluation and guardrails. MLA-C01 stopped being offered in English on 28 September 2026.
The official guide states 50 scored and 15 unscored questions. During the beta the exam has 85 questions and 170 minutes, according to the certification page.
Scores range from 100 to 1,000 and the minimum passing score is 720. Scoring is compensatory: you only need to pass the exam overall.
At least one year using Amazon SageMaker AI, Amazon Bedrock and other AWS services for ML engineering, plus a year in a related role such as backend development, DevOps, data engineering or data science.
