Databricks Certified Generative AI Engineer Associate validates that you can design and implement LLM-enabled solutions on Databricks: decomposing the problem, choosing models and tools, preparing data for RAG, building chains and agents, deploying them with Model Serving, governing them with Unity Catalog, and evaluating and monitoring them with MLflow.

Before a wider rollout, a Generative AI Engineer wants non-technical subject-matter experts to chat with a prototype agent, give feedback on its answers and record what a correct answer should look like, all without writing code. Which Databricks capability should be used?

AI, data and ML engineers with about six months of hands-on practice building generative AI applications on Databricks, with Python and working knowledge of LangChain, MLflow and Vector Search.
Databricks Certified Generative AI Engineer Associate checks that you can design and implement LLM-enabled applications on Databricks: decomposing the problem, choosing models and tools, and building and deploying RAG applications, chains and agents.
The March 2026 exam guide has six sections: design applications (14%), data preparation (14%), application development (30%), assembling and deploying applications (22%), governance (8%), and evaluation and monitoring (12%).
Data and retrieval: chunking strategies, document extraction, Delta tables in Unity Catalog, Mosaic AI Vector Search, hybrid search and re-ranking. Development: prompt design, choosing an LLM and an embedding model, guardrails, and agents with MLflow and Agent Framework, including Agent Bricks, Genie and MCP servers.
Deployment and operations: pyfunc models, registering to Unity Catalog, Model Serving and Foundation Model APIs, ai_query() for batch inference, prompt version control and CI/CD. Evaluation: MLflow judges and scorers, tracing, inference tables, AI Gateway and cost control.
Databricks recommends about six months of hands-on practice and its Generative AI Engineering courses. Questions describe a situation with concrete constraints (latency, cost, document format, governance) and ask for the best of four options that all look workable.
