Associate Cloud Engineer validates that you can deploy and operate workloads on Google Cloud: set up projects, the resource hierarchy, IAM and billing; choose the right compute, storage and network resources; deploy Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Run, databases and VPC networks, including through infrastructure as code; keep them running with snapshots, instance groups, node pools, Cloud Monitoring and Cloud Logging; and manage roles, policies and service accounts from the console and gcloud.

You manage 200 Linux VMs spread over two zones with VM Manager enabled. They must be patched every month, at most 10% of the VMs in a zone may be disrupted at the same time, and a script must stop the application on each VM before it is patched. What should you do?

Cloud engineers, administrators and developers with at least six months of hands-on experience on Google Cloud, comfortable with the console and the gcloud CLI.
Associate Cloud Engineer is the Google Cloud certification for people who deploy and operate workloads on the platform: set up projects, IAM and billing, choose the right resources, deploy them and keep them running with the console and the gcloud CLI. It is a hands-on exam: many questions describe a situation and ask for the right command, role or configuration.
The official guide has five sections: setting up a cloud solution environment (about 20%), planning and configuring a cloud solution (17.5%), deploying and implementing it (25%), ensuring successful operation (20%) and configuring access and security (17.5%).
Foundations: the resource hierarchy, organization policies, IAM roles, Cloud Identity, APIs, quotas and billing accounts with budgets and exports. Choosing resources: Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run and Cloud Run functions; Cloud SQL, BigQuery, Firestore, Spanner and Bigtable; Cloud Storage classes, load balancing and Network Service Tiers.
Deployment and operations: instances, templates and managed instance groups, OS Login and VM Manager; GKE Autopilot and Standard clusters, kubectl, node pools and autoscaling; Cloud Run revisions and traffic splitting; VPCs, subnets, firewall rules, VPN and peering; Terraform; snapshots and images; Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Logging, the Ops Agent and audit logs; and service accounts, impersonation and short-lived credentials.
Google recommends at least six months of hands-on experience. With that base, three to five weeks are usually enough following the official Cloud Engineer learning path and practising with gcloud in your own project: the exam uses current product names (Cloud Run functions, Artifact Registry, gcloud storage).
