AB-620 vs PL-400: which certification to choose and in what order

AB-620 and PL-400 overlap in Power Platform, Dataverse, connectors and ALM, but they certify different specializations: AB-620 validates designing and integrating agents with Copilot Studio; PL-400 validates extending the whole platform with code (plug-ins, PCF, Web API, Azure Functions). Choose based on the work you do, not on exam-code hierarchy: there is no prerequisite between them.

1

Choose AB-620 if you build agents

AB-620 fits developers and advanced makers integrating Copilot Studio agents with enterprise knowledge, APIs, MCP, Foundry, Fabric and other agents. It tests the design, orchestration, evaluation and operation of agent solutions.

It is the direct choice when your role revolves around Copilot Studio and you want to demonstrate a current enterprise-agent specialization.

2

Choose PL-400 if you extend Power Platform with code

PL-400 is broader: Dataverse plug-ins, PCF, model-driven app scripting, custom connectors, Web API, Azure Functions, events and complex automation.

It is better suited to building components and integrations for Power Apps and Dataverse, whether or not they use AI.

3

Where the knowledge overlaps

Both routes require solutions, environment variables, pipelines, connectors, APIs, security and Dataverse. PL-400 supplies useful technical foundations for AB-620, while AB-620 adds RAG, MCP, A2A, enterprise knowledge, agent evaluation and multi-agent collaboration.

There is no formal prerequisite between them. Choose an order based on the work you perform, not an assumed hierarchy between exam codes.

4

Recommended order

For a Power Platform developer, PL-400 followed by AB-620 is a natural progression. If you already build agents and work confidently with APIs, you can take AB-620 directly and cover classic platform extensions later.

Compare both official outlines (AB-620 and PL-400) before booking and choose the exam whose tasks you can practice in a real environment.

Frequently asked questions

Is AB-620 easier than PL-400?

They are not comparable in difficulty: PL-400 requires writing and debugging code; AB-620 requires agent architecture, integration and evaluation decisions. Each is easier for the profile that already does that work every day.

Do I need PL-400 before AB-620?

No. There are no formal prerequisites between the two certifications.

Can I hold both certifications?

Yes, and it is a common combination: PL-400 covers extending the platform with code and AB-620 covers agent solutions on that same platform.
