AZ-401 (Agentic DevOps Engineer Expert) replaces AZ-400 and validates that you can design, implement and optimize AI-assisted DevOps solutions across Azure DevOps and GitHub: design the flow of work, traceability and success metrics; configure MCP servers and the integration between Azure Boards and GitHub; branching strategies, policies and repository migration; YAML pipelines with GitHub Copilot, quality gates, testing, packages, deployments and infrastructure as code; secretless authentication, Key Vault and security scanning with GitHub Advanced Security and Defender for Cloud; and monitoring with Azure Monitor, Azure SRE Agent, Azure Copilot Observability Agent and KQL. Beta outline (study guide of 13 October 2026); the bank will be reviewed when the exam leaves beta.

Your organization uses GitHub Enterprise Cloud. An external CI server and an audit logger must be notified in near real time whenever code is pushed or a pull request review is submitted in any organization repository, without hitting API rate limits as repositories are added. What should you use?

DevOps engineers, developers and infrastructure administrators experienced with Azure DevOps and GitHub, with YAML, KQL and Bicep, and with Microsoft and GitHub AI tools. The certification also requires passing GH-300 or AZ-104.
AZ-401 (Exam AZ-401: Designing and Implementing Microsoft Agentic DevOps Solutions) is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: Agentic DevOps Engineer Expert certification, which replaces [AZ-400](/en/certifications/az-400): AZ-400 and DevOps Engineer Expert retire on 1 February 2027. It validates that you can design, implement and optimize AI-assisted DevOps solutions across Azure DevOps and GitHub, using GitHub Copilot, MCP servers and agents throughout the lifecycle: planning, code, pipelines, deployment, security and operations. It has been in beta since 15 October 2026, in English only, and Microsoft expects general availability in December 2026.
The beta study guide of 13 October 2026 has five areas: design and implement processes and communications (15–20%), design and implement a source control strategy (10–15%), design and implement build and release pipelines (35–40%), design and implement a security and compliance plan (15–20%), and implement an instrumentation strategy (15–20%). Pipelines account for more than a third of the exam.
Processes and source control: structuring the flow of work and traceability with Azure Boards, DevOps success metrics derived from business KPIs and queried with AI-assisted tools, project documentation, requirements and restrictions for agentic development (agents, skills and loops), the Azure DevOps and GitHub MCP servers, and integrating Azure Boards with GitHub through MCP. For repositories: branching strategies (trunk-based, feature and release branches, Git Worktree, Git flow and GitHub flow), branch policies and protection rules, including for GitHub Copilot, permissions, tags, Git hooks, migrating from Azure DevOps to GitHub, and recovering or removing data with Git commands.
Pipelines, security and instrumentation: Azure Artifacts and GitHub Packages with feeds, views and SemVer or CalVer versioning; quality gates, tests and code coverage with GitHub Copilot and MCP; agents and runners, YAML written with GitHub Copilot, triggers, templates, environments with checks and approvals, and GitHub Agentic Workflows; blue-green, canary, ring and feature-flag deployments, slots and infrastructure as code. Then managed identities, secretless authentication, GITHUB_TOKEN and GitHub Apps, Azure Key Vault, GitHub Advanced Security and Defender for Cloud DevOps Security; and monitoring with Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Azure Copilot Observability Agent, Azure SRE Agent, GitHub Copilot agent logs and KQL or natural language queries.
AZ-401 is an expert-level exam for people who already work with Azure DevOps and GitHub and write YAML, KQL and Bicep. If you come from [AZ-400](/en/certifications/az-400), much of the outline will feel familiar; what is new is MCP servers, GitHub Agentic Workflows, quality gates and tests driven by GitHub Copilot, and monitoring with Azure SRE Agent and Azure Copilot Observability Agent. Because the certification also requires [GH-300](/en/certifications/gh-300) or [AZ-104](/en/certifications/az-104), pick the one that fits your profile. As a beta, the exam does not yet have its own Microsoft Learn learning paths: practise with a test Azure DevOps organization and GitHub repository, build a multi-stage pipeline with environments and approvals, connect Key Vault with workload identity federation and turn on GitHub Advanced Security.
Start free to measure your level and practise by area. The bank has more than 350 questions across the 5 domains and 76 skill points of the beta study guide of 13 October 2026, and the mock exam uses 50 questions in 100 minutes. We will review it when the exam leaves beta and Microsoft publishes the final outline.

Microsoft does not publish the duration or the number of questions for the AZ-401 beta. Its expert-level exams usually have 40 to 60 questions in about 100 minutes, with case studies and interactive items. Our mock exam uses 50 questions in 100 minutes.
You need 700 out of 1,000. In the beta you do not get your score at the end: Microsoft rescores the exam when it goes live and releases results about 10 days later.
The fee depends on the country; in the United States Microsoft expert-level exams cost 165 USD. During the beta, the first 300 candidates who take the exam on or before 9 November 2026 get 80% off with the code AZ401Glendon (not available in Turkey, Pakistan, India or China). CertifyDeck does not sell the exam, only the preparation: you can start free and full access is a one-time payment.
English only during the beta; if English is not your first language you can request 30 extra minutes. On CertifyDeck every question and explanation is available in English and Spanish.
Besides AZ-401, the Agentic DevOps Engineer Expert certification requires passing GH-300 (GitHub Copilot) or AZ-104 (Microsoft Azure Administrator). Microsoft expects experience administering or developing solutions with Microsoft technologies, hands-on YAML, KQL and Bicep, and experience with Azure DevOps, GitHub and their AI tools.
Probably: it has been in beta since 15 October 2026 and Microsoft expects general availability in December, when it may adjust the outline based on beta results. Our bank follows the beta study guide of 13 October 2026 and will be reviewed when the exam leaves beta.
