PL-200 (Power Platform Functional Consultant) was retired on 31 August 2026, so the only one of the two certifications you can book today is PL-400 (Power Platform Developer). The comparison is still useful: it tells you whether your profile was functional or developer-oriented, and therefore whether your natural next step is PL-400 or a different path such as AB-620.
What the PL-200 measured
The PL-200 certified someone who could configure the platform without writing code: canvas and model-driven apps, Power Automate flows, Dataverse forms and views, declarative business rules, and basic role-based security.
It was the exam for functional consultants, CRM/ERP administrators, and advanced makers who translate business requirements into configuration alongside end users. Since 31 August 2026 it can no longer be booked or renewed.
What the PL-400 measures
The PL-400 assumes you already have low-code configuration down and focuses on extending the platform with code: C# plug-ins, TypeScript PCF components, custom connectors, Azure Function integrations, and consuming the Dataverse APIs directly.
It is an exam for developers with real programming experience — having used Power Apps as a maker isn't enough. It lasts 100 minutes, requires 700 out of 1,000 points, and is available in Spanish. The PL-400 skills outline lists every objective.
The overlap (and why it's smaller than it looks)
Both exams touched Dataverse, security, and Power Automate, but from different angles: the PL-200 asked how to configure a view or a flow from the interface; the PL-400 asks how that same flow integrates with a plug-in or an Azure Function when configuration alone can't get the job done.
What does transfer fully from a functional profile is the Dataverse data model, role-based security, environments, solutions and ALM: PL-400 takes them for granted.
Which path to follow now
If you already write C#, JavaScript, or TypeScript and your role is extending the platform with custom integrations and components, go straight for PL-400 — there was never a formal prerequisite forcing you through PL-200 first. Measure your level with 10 free questions.
If your profile was functional and you don't code, PL-400 is a real jump: budget time to write your own code before booking (the study plan by starting level quantifies it). And if your work has shifted toward agents and Copilot Studio, the certification that best reflects that role is AB-620; AB-620 vs PL-400 compares the two.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still take the PL-200 exam?
No. PL-200 and the Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate certification were retired on 31 August 2026. A credential earned before that date stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript.
Is PL-400 the replacement for PL-200?
Not exactly. PL-400 is the developer certification and requires writing code; it is the natural continuation for a functional consultant who already extends the platform, not an equivalent.
Did I need PL-200 before PL-400?
No. There have never been formal prerequisites between them; with C#, JavaScript or TypeScript and Dataverse experience you can sit PL-400 directly.
How long is the PL-400 exam?
100 minutes, with a passing score of 700 out of 1,000. It is available in English, Spanish and other languages, and renews annually for free.
