Is AB-730 hard? What it takes if you use Copilot daily, sometimes or never

Where the real difficulty of AB-730 lies for three profiles: people who use Microsoft 365 Copilot every day, those who use it occasionally and those with no access. What you are missing in each case and how long you need.

Is AB-730 hard? What it takes if you use Copilot daily, sometimes or never

AB-730 is beginner level and lasts 45 minutes, so it is not hard because of depth. What decides whether it costs you is one thing: how much you have really used Microsoft 365 Copilot. The questions distinguish between features (referencing a file, saving a prompt, scheduling it, sharing it, Pages, notebooks, meeting recap) that only differ clearly if you have used them. That is why this article splits preparation by your actual usage.

1

Why AB-730 is not as easy as it looks

The outline is short (three domains until 20 October 2026) and the exam lasts 45 minutes, but the questions are not definitions: they describe a situation and offer four real Copilot features that solve different things, as the sample questions by domain show. People who know Copilot by hearsay tend to fail between options that look equivalent to them.

On top of that, the prompts and conversations domain weighs 35–40% and is the most concrete: how to write an effective prompt, what to reference, how to save, schedule and share it, how to manage chats and what notebooks are. It is where using the product shows most.

2

If you use Copilot every day

You have 70% of the work done. What is usually missing is the official framework: the responsible-use block (risks such as inaccuracies, prompt injection and over-reliance; verification steps such as citation checks and human review; how data protection restricts results) and naming what you do in Microsoft's words. Plan: read the outline by domain, take a test per domain to find the two or three gaps and book a date one or two weeks out.

3

If you use it occasionally

You probably write prompts and ask for summaries, but have not saved or scheduled a prompt, have not used notebooks or Pages, and in meetings have not tried intelligent recap or preparation. That is the gap, and it matches the heaviest domain. Plan: spend a week on prompt and chat management using each feature once with a real case, another on content and meetings (create a document from a prompt, transform an existing one, summarize, move an insight between apps, prepare and recap a meeting) and a third on fundamentals and mock exams. That is the three-week plan.

4

If you have no access to Copilot

This is the hard case. You can study the outline with Microsoft's documentation and prep videos, but the questions separate features that look identical on paper. Before setting a date, try to get access: the Microsoft 365 Copilot license at your company, a trial, or at least the free Copilot Chat features with a work account, which cover part of the prompts domain.

If there is no way, compensate with question practice: practise AB-730 by domain and, on every mistake, read the explanation of why each feature is for what it is for. It does not replace the product, but it builds the distinction the exam measures.

5

How long, and when to sit

Simple rule: one or two weeks if you use Copilot daily, three if you use it sometimes, more than a month if you start without access. The exam lasts 45 minutes, is available in 13 languages and needs 700 out of 1,000; Microsoft's free practice assessment helps calibrate the style before booking.

On the date: the English version changes on 20 October 2026 and adds a prebuilt agents and Microsoft Copilot Cowork domain (20–25%). If you sit in English after that date, add that block to your plan; other languages keep the current outline about eight weeks longer. We explain it in AB-730 changes on 20 October.

Frequently asked questions

Is AB-730 hard to pass?

For daily Microsoft 365 Copilot users, no: it is a matter of learning the official framework and the responsible-use block. For people who have not used Copilot, yes, because the questions distinguish features that only differ with practice.

How long does AB-730 preparation take?

One or two weeks if you use Copilot daily, about three if you use it occasionally, and more than a month if you start without access to the product.

Can I pass AB-730 without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license?

Possible but hard. Try to get access, even to Copilot Chat with a work account, and compensate with question practice with explanations.

Which AB-730 domain is hardest?

Manage prompts and conversations (35–40% until 20 October 2026): saving, scheduling and sharing prompts, managing chats and notebooks. It is where using the product shows most.
