How to pass AB-620: a 6-week study plan

AB-620 (Microsoft Certified: AI Agent Builder Associate) requires 700 out of 1,000 points, and you won't pass it by memorizing Copilot Studio screens: the exam asks you to decide how to design, integrate, test and deploy enterprise agents. This plan turns the three official domains into six weeks of preparation built around a real agent.

1

What you need to know before starting AB-620

Microsoft expects hands-on experience building agents with instructions, knowledge, tools and topics. You also need foundations in Power Fx, Dataverse, Power Platform environments, adaptive cards, REST APIs and generative AI concepts such as RAG, MCP and A2A.

If you have not published an agent yet, first build a small one that retrieves enterprise knowledge and performs an action. That experience gives architecture questions real context; without it, every option looks plausible.

2

Follow the official weighting

Spend roughly one third of your time planning and configuring solutions, almost half integrating and extending agents, and the remainder on testing and ALM. The AB-620 skills outline lists every objective; integration is the decisive area: connectors, REST, MCP, Azure AI Search, Foundry, Fabric and multi-agent collaboration.

Do not study every product in isolation. Work through scenarios that require you to select a knowledge source, a tool and an identity strategy while preserving governance and least privilege.

3

A practical six-week plan

Weeks one and two: planning, identity, channels, governance, flows, topics and variables. Weeks three and four: enterprise sources, tools, MCP, APIs, computer use and multi-agent systems. Weeks five and six: evaluation, Application Insights, solutions, environment variables and pipelines.

Take a diagnostic mock exam first and another after each domain. Turn every mistake into a decision you can explain rather than an answer you memorize.

4

When to book the AB-620 exam

Book when you can justify an integration choice, secure its credentials, measure agent quality and move the solution between environments. Keep results consistent across unseen mock exams and check the official guide shortly before exam day.

The AB-620 page organizes practice around the three official domains with bilingual explanations. If you are torn between AB-620 and PL-400, read AB-620 vs PL-400.

Frequently asked questions

What is the passing score for AB-620?

700 out of 1,000, like every Microsoft certification exam.

Do I need to code for AB-620?

It is not a programming exam, but it does require understanding REST APIs, authentication, Power Fx and agent protocols (MCP, A2A). An advanced maker with that foundation can prepare it; a developer will need to strengthen Copilot Studio skills.

Which domain carries the most weight in AB-620?

Integrate and extend agents, at 40–45% of the exam: connectors, REST, MCP, Azure AI Search, Foundry, Fabric and multi-agent collaboration.

How long does it take to prepare for AB-620?

About six weeks if you have already published agents in Copilot Studio; add two or three if you are starting from scratch with APIs, identity or generative AI.
