MLA-C02 is the updated version of AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer - Associate. Right now it runs as a beta: English only, 85 questions in 170 minutes, 75 USD. Here is what it certifies, who gets value from it and who should take a different exam.
What it certifies
According to the official exam guide, MLA-C02 validates your ability to build, operationalize, deploy and maintain AI and ML solutions and pipelines on AWS, with traditional ML models and foundation models (FMs). That covers data preparation, training and tuning, CI/CD, agentic workflows, monitoring and security.
Compared with MLA-C01, AWS adds generative AI on Amazon Bedrock and RAG architectures, agentic AI, FM selection and fine-tuning, and responsible AI. The four-domain structure stays the same; the tasks and skills inside each domain were updated.
Who it makes sense for
The target candidate has at least one year using Amazon SageMaker AI, Amazon Bedrock and other AWS services for ML engineering, plus a year in a related role such as backend developer, DevOps, data engineer or data scientist. AWS lists ML engineer, MLOps engineer, LLMOps engineer, data engineer, backend developer and data scientist as example roles.
It pays off if you already ship models to production, or are about to, and want one credential that covers both SageMaker AI and Bedrock. It fits well if you come from data or backend work and your job now includes RAG, agents or inference endpoints.
Who it is not for (and what fits instead)
The guide puts designing end-to-end AI solutions, setting ML strategy and working deeply in several ML domains out of scope. If your job is general AWS architecture, SAA-C03 is more direct; if you build applications without training or operating models, look at DVA-C02.
If you are starting out in AI or work on the business side, AIF-C01 covers the concepts without hands-on engineering, and Generative AI Leader targets people who make decisions about generative AI. If your platform is Databricks, the counterpart is Databricks Generative AI Engineer Associate.
What the exam requires
The MLA-C02 beta has 85 multiple-choice and multiple-response questions, lasts 170 minutes and costs 75 USD (beta pricing). It is English only; Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese arrive at general availability, for which AWS has not published a date yet. You take it at a Pearson VUE test center or online with a proctor.
For the standard version, the guide states 50 scored and 15 unscored questions, a scaled score from 100 to 1,000 and a passing score of 720. The certification is valid for 3 years and you can renew it by passing the latest version of the exam, among other options.
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| 1. Data Preparation for ML and AI | 28% |
| 2. ML Model and Foundation Model (FM) Development | 24% |
| 3. Deployment and Orchestration of ML and AI Workflows | 24% |
| 4. Operating, Monitoring, and Securing ML and AI Solutions | 24% |

How to decide: a quick diagnostic
Go through the four domains and mark the tasks you have done for real: loading data into SageMaker Feature Store, tuning hyperparameters with automatic model tuning, creating a Bedrock knowledge base, configuring an endpoint inside a VPC, applying Amazon Bedrock Guardrails. If you are missing more than half, plan a longer study period with labs.
Then run a short test with the MLA-C02 sample questions and read the explained outline. If you miss mostly generative AI or security items, you know where to start. You can keep practicing with the MLA-C02 question bank: start free and decide with your own numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Is MLA-C02 still in beta?
Yes. The official page lists it as "Updated - Beta": registration opened on 1 September 2026 and beta delivery began on 29 September. General availability dates are listed as TBD.
Do I need prior experience for MLA-C02?
There are no formal prerequisites, but AWS recommends at least 1 year with SageMaker AI, Bedrock and other AWS ML services, and experience with both traditional ML and generative AI. Without ML experience, AWS suggests starting with the training in the Exam Prep Plans.
How is it different from Machine Learning - Specialty?
AWS describes the Associate as a role-based exam for ML engineers and MLOps engineers with at least one year of experience. The Specialty covers data engineering, analysis, modeling and implementation, and suits people with 2 or more years building and running ML workloads on AWS.
How long is the certification valid?
Three years. To renew, pass the latest version of the exam or AWS Certified Generative AI Developer - Professional, or maintain it for one more year with a paid AWS Skill Builder subscription.
I hold MLA-C01. Do I need MLA-C02 now?
Not right away. AWS states that your certification stays active for its full validity period regardless of when you earned it. MLA-C02 becomes relevant when you need to renew.
