MS-102 retires on 30 November 2026: what to do if you are preparing for it

Microsoft will retire exam MS-102 and the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert certification on 30 November 2026 at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time. After that date it can no longer be earned or renewed. If you already hold it, it stays on your transcript; if you are preparing for it, you have about nine weeks and a decision to make: go for it or change target. Here are the official facts and a way to decide.

1

What exactly is being retired

Two things retire at once: exam MS-102 (Microsoft 365 Administrator) and the expert-level certification it unlocks, Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert. The official exam page has shown the notice since June 2026 and sets the retirement on 30 November 2026 at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time. Any attempt after that time does not count toward the certification.

The English version of the exam was last updated on 28 April 2026, with these domains: deploy and manage a Microsoft 365 tenant (25-30%), identity and access with Microsoft Entra (25-30%), security and threats with Microsoft Defender XDR (30-35%) and compliance with Microsoft Purview (10-15%). That is the outline you will see until the end.

2

What happens if you already hold the certification

Nothing you need to do. Retired certifications remain on your Microsoft Learn transcript, in the retired certifications section, with the date you earned them, and you can keep sharing the badge. What disappears is the ability to renew: when the next annual expiry arrives, there will be no renewal assessment.

On your CV, list it as it is, with the year. Recruiters who work with Microsoft 365 know MS-102 was the reference exam for tenant administration, and a retired certification does not lose the value of what you proved by passing it.

3

Is it worth sitting now?

It depends on two things: whether you meet the prerequisite and how far along you are. For a pass on MS-102 to grant the Expert title you must already hold one of these associates: Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate (MD-102), Teams Administrator Associate (MS-700), Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate (SC-300) or Information Security Administrator Associate (SC-401). If you have none and cannot earn one before 30 November as well, passing MS-102 leaves you with a passed exam and no certification.

If you meet the prerequisite and administer Microsoft 365 daily, nine weeks are enough: six to seven of structured preparation plus room for a second attempt, since Microsoft allows a retake 24 hours after the first fail. If you are starting from scratch in identity, Defender or Purview, the calendar is very tight and the risk of ending without the title is high. In that case the same weeks are better spent on a certification that stays current.

One practical detail: book your seat as early as possible. In the last weeks before a retirement, Pearson VUE slots fill up, especially at test centers and in localized versions.

4

Alternatives if you decide not to sit it

The new path for the same role is AB-650, Administering Microsoft 365 and AI Services, which earns an associate-level certification with no prerequisite and devotes 35–40% of the exam to Copilot and agents. It is in beta and English only; Microsoft announces general availability for October 2026. We explain it in AB-650: taking over from MS-102 and you can already practise with the AB-650 questions.

Among the exams you can prepare today with an immediate score, SC-300 is the most natural continuation. Identity with Microsoft Entra is 25-30% of MS-102 and in SC-300 it is the whole exam: users and hybrid identities, authentication and Conditional Access, workload identities and access governance. It stays current and is one of the prerequisites of the Expert certification itself, so nothing you study is wasted. Start with the SC-300 practice questions.

AB-900 covers the newest part of Microsoft 365 administration: Copilot, agents, data protection with Purview and tenant security, in a 45-minute fundamentals exam. It is the entry point to Microsoft's AI certification catalog and fits the profile of an administrator managing a tenant with Copilot. The AB-900 practice test shows the format.

If your job is security and compliance (40-50% of MS-102 between Defender XDR and Purview), look at SC-401, Information Security Administrator, which Microsoft added to the Expert prerequisites precisely because of that overlap.

5

A nine-week plan for MS-102

If you go for it, order your study by weight: the first three weeks for Defender XDR and Purview, two for identity and access with Entra, two for tenant configuration, and the rest for timed mock exams and error review. Measure your starting point with MS-102 practice by domain before you begin, so you do not spend weeks on what you already know.

Book the exam for mid-November, not the last day, so you keep room for a second attempt if needed. And confirm on the official page that your prior associate certification is registered on your Microsoft Learn profile before you sit; it is the most common mistake in retirements.

Frequently asked questions

Until when can I take the MS-102 exam?

Until 30 November 2026 at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time. Any later attempt cannot be booked and does not count toward the Administrator Expert certification.

If I pass MS-102 without a prior associate certification, do I get certified?

No. Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert requires one of these associates first: Endpoint Administrator (MD-102), Teams Administrator (MS-700), Identity and Access Administrator (SC-300) or Information Security Administrator (SC-401). Both must be in place before 30 November 2026.

Is there a certification replacing MS-102?

Microsoft has not named an official replacement and there is no other expert-level certification for Microsoft 365 administration. The closest current one is AB-650, associate level, in beta since July 2026 and with general availability announced for October. The identity (SC-300) and security (SC-401) associates and the Copilot and agent fundamentals exam (AB-900) remain current.

Do I lose the Administrator Expert certification if I already have it?

No. It stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript as a retired certification, with the date you earned it. What you can no longer do is renew it when its annual period expires.
