GH-300 is the exam for the GitHub Copilot certification. It tests whether you can use Copilot to write better and safer code, not whether you know AI in the abstract. If you already use Copilot every day, the gap is small; if you have never used it, start somewhere else.
What GH-300 actually certifies
The official profile asks for experience using GitHub Copilot to improve development productivity, quality and security. That covers responsible AI use, prompt engineering, Copilot features across plans and privacy safeguards. It also assumes you know GitHub fundamentals and code in at least one language.
GitHub rates it as an intermediate exam aimed at four roles: App Maker, Developer, DevOps Engineer and Technology Manager. The current outline dates from 7 August 2026 and includes Copilot CLI, agent mode, MCP, Spaces, Spark and organization-wide policy management.
Who it makes sense for
It makes sense if you code with Copilot and want to show you use it with judgement: you know what data it sends, how to exclude content, when to distrust a suggestion and how to get value from chat, agent mode and the CLI. It also fits if you administer Copilot for an organization, because the exam asks about policies, audit log events and managing subscriptions with the REST API.
For a technical lead deciding how to roll Copilot out to a team, the privacy and exclusions domain is useful on its own. And if you are a verified student in the GitHub Student Developer Pack, you can get a free voucher for this exam through DataCamp, which removes the cost.
Who it is not for, and what fits them better
If you do not write code, GH-300 will be an uphill climb: many questions start from an IDE, a repository or a pull request flow. For a business profile that wants to understand generative AI, Google Cloud's Generative AI Leader fits better, and for no-code AI fundamentals, AI-901 or AIF-C01.
If you want to build applications with models, RAG or agents, Copilot is only a tool and the exam does not cover that design work. Look at AI-103 or Databricks Generative AI Engineer Associate. If your job is pipelines and deployments, AZ-400 covers GitHub Actions and DevOps in depth.
What the exam requires
You get 100 minutes for 60 scored multiple-choice questions plus about 10-15 unscored pretest items. The pass mark is 700 or more, delivery is through Pearson VUE at a test center or online, and it is offered in English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Korean and Japanese. It costs USD 99, with regional pricing by country, and the certification lasts 2 years.
It is closed book: unlike Microsoft associate-level exams, GitHub exams give you no access to Microsoft Learn during the test. The domain split is in the table.
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Use GitHub Copilot responsibly | 15-20% |
| Use GitHub Copilot features | 25-30% |
| Understand GitHub Copilot data and architecture | 10-15% |
| Apply prompt engineering and context crafting | 10-15% |
| Improve developer productivity with GitHub Copilot | 10-15% |
| Configure privacy, content exclusions, and safeguards | 10-15% |

How to decide in half an hour
Try this: explain, without looking, what content exclusion does and where it is configured, how agent mode differs from inline suggestions, and what the public code matching filter does. If you answer all three with confidence, you already hold a good part of the exam; if you miss two, plan for several weeks of study.
Then answer the GH-300 sample questions and go through the outline with explanations. If you score above 70% and use Copilot daily, it is worth booking a date. You can continue with the GH-300 question bank: start free and move to the full mock exam when you are ready.
