Format and question types

GitHub describes its exams as 60 scored multiple-choice questions plus about 10-15 pretest items, varying by exam, and closed book. Pretest items do not count and are not flagged, so treat every question the same. The Microsoft Learn page adds that there may be interactive components.

To see the interface before exam day, Microsoft Learn offers an exam sandbox with the question types. If the exam is not available in your language you can request 30 extra minutes; with English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Korean and Japanese on offer, check whether your language is covered first.

3

How to book, step by step

Go to the certification page at learn.github.com/credentials and click Schedule Now: it takes you to the exam page on Microsoft Learn, where you choose to schedule with Pearson VUE. Microsoft recommends booking with a personal Microsoft account rather than a work account, because you would lose your records if you leave the company.

While booking you pick a test center or an online exam. Online, you will run a system check and install the secure browser. Pearson VUE lets you book no more than 90 days in advance.

4

On exam day

You need a valid government-issued ID with your name, photo and signature, such as a passport or driving licence. The first and last name on the booking must match the ID exactly; failing to identify yourself counts as a missed appointment and the fee is not refunded.

For online delivery, GitHub advises logging in at least 15 minutes early for check-in. You can reschedule or cancel from Upcoming Appointments in your profile.

5

Retakes, validity and renewal

If you fail, you wait 24 hours for the first retake and 14 days before each later one, with a maximum of 5 attempts in 12 months. Each retake is paid.

The certification is valid for 2 years. GitHub is moving to Microsoft's renewal process, which will let you keep it without retaking the full exam, and extends by 6 months the certifications that expire before that process is ready. Your certificate appears in your Microsoft Learn profile.

How to pay less and arrive prepared

If you are a verified student in the GitHub Student Developer Pack, you complete the GitHub Foundations path on DataCamp and receive a free voucher valid for GH-300 or GH-900. To prepare, first answer the GH-300 sample questions and then move to the GH-300 question bank, which you can start free and which includes 60-question mock exams in 100 minutes.
