AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) is the AWS entry-level certification. It shows that you understand the AWS Cloud at a conceptual level, not that you can build on it. Whether it fits you depends mostly on where you start and what you need to prove.
What it certifies
According to the official exam guide, the exam is for people who can demonstrate overall knowledge of the AWS Cloud, independent of a specific job role. It validates that you can explain the value of AWS, the shared responsibility model, the AWS Well-Architected Framework, security best practices, costs and billing, and that you can position the core compute, network, database and storage services.
The target candidate has up to 6 months of exposure to AWS, though AWS states this is not required. Coding, designing cloud architecture, troubleshooting, implementation and load testing are explicitly out of scope. It certifies vocabulary and judgement, not console skills.
Who it makes sense for
AWS aims it at business roles such as sales, marketing, product and project management, and at people without an IT background moving into cloud. If your job involves talking to technical teams, scoping projects or selling AWS-based solutions, it gives you a shared language and a verifiable Credly badge.
It also works as a first step before an Associate exam if you have never studied AWS. Passing unlocks a 50% voucher for your next exam, which matters on a 150 USD Associate exam.
Who should skip it, and what to take instead
If you already deploy on AWS every day, CLF-C02 adds little. AWS has no prerequisites for any exam, so you can go straight to SAA-C03 if you design solutions or DVA-C02 if you write code for AWS.
If your interest is generative AI on AWS, AIF-C01 is the equivalent entry exam with that focus. If your company runs on Microsoft, the counterpart is AZ-900; on Google Cloud, look at Generative AI Leader or Associate Cloud Engineer. The catalog lists every option.
What the exam requires
You get 65 questions in 90 minutes, either multiple choice (one correct answer) or multiple response (two or more correct). Only 50 are scored; the other 15 are unscored and not identified. Scores run from 100 to 1,000 and the pass mark is 700, with a compensatory model: you do not need to pass each domain separately.
You can test at a Pearson VUE center or online with a proctor, in 12 languages. AWS has announced that the Italian and German versions will be retired after 31 December 2026. The domains are weighted as follows:
| Domain | Weight of scored content |
|---|---|
| 1. Cloud Concepts | 24% |
| 2. Security and Compliance | 30% |
| 3. Cloud Technology and Services | 34% |
| 4. Billing, Pricing, and Support | 12% |

How to decide in ten minutes
Run a quick check: without looking anything up, explain the difference between a Region and an Availability Zone, which part of Amazon EC2 security is your job, and what a Spot Instance is. If all three are a struggle, CLF-C02 is the right exam and it will give you a solid base.
If you answer them easily, try the sample questions and check your score. Above 80%, book the exam within a few weeks or move up to an Associate. To practise the full bank with explanations, start free.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the CLF-C02 exam cost?
100 USD, or 85 EUR in countries that pay in euros. AWS notes that taxes may apply and that the price covers one attempt.
Do I need experience before taking CLF-C02?
No. AWS has no prerequisites, and the guide describes up to 6 months of exposure to AWS as a typical profile, not a requirement.
How long is AWS Cloud Practitioner valid?
Three years. You can renew it free with AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner in the 6 months before it expires, by passing the current exam version, or by passing any Associate or Professional exam.
Should I start with CLF-C02 or AIF-C01?
Both are Foundational and cost the same. CLF-C02 covers AWS in general; AIF-C01 focuses on AI and generative AI. If AI is your goal, start with AIF-C01.
Is CLF-C02 hard?
It is the entry-level AWS exam and needs no coding or architecture skills. The difficulty lies in telling similar services apart and in the security domain, which carries 30% of the score.
