CLF-C02 is passed with 700 out of 1,000 and requires no coding. What it does require is telling similar services apart and knowing security and billing well. This plan spreads four weeks according to the real weight of each domain.
Prerequisites
AWS has no prerequisites and no mandatory training. The official guide describes a candidate with up to 6 months of exposure to AWS and leaves coding, architecture design and troubleshooting out of scope. If you know what a server, a database and a network are, you have enough to start.
Plan on 4 to 6 hours a week for four weeks. If you are new to technology, stretch it to six weeks by doubling weeks 2 and 3.
Week-by-week plan
Week 1, Cloud Concepts (24%): cloud benefits, the six pillars of the Well-Architected Framework, the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework, migration strategies and cloud economics. Take the Official Practice Question Set at the end of the week to see the question style.
Week 2, Security and Compliance (30%): the shared responsibility model and how it shifts between Amazon EC2, Amazon RDS and AWS Lambda; IAM, the root user, MFA, IAM Identity Center and least privilege; AWS WAF, AWS Shield, Amazon GuardDuty and AWS Artifact. Week 3, Cloud Technology and Services (34%): Regions and Availability Zones, EC2 instance types, containers, serverless, databases, VPC, storage, AI and analytics.
Week 4, Billing, Pricing, and Support (12%) and review: On-Demand, Reserved Instances, Savings Plans and Spot; AWS Budgets, AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Organizations and the AWS Support plans. Spend the second half on mock exams and on reviewing your weak domains in the study guide.
Free official resources
AWS suggests a four-step plan on AWS Skill Builder: get to know the exam, fill gaps, review and practise, and assess readiness. The 2-hour Exam Prep course, the 20-question Official Practice Question Set and the basic AWS Cloud Quest are free.
The full Official Practice Exam and the labs need a Skill Builder subscription, from 29 USD a month. Also read the in-scope and out-of-scope service lists in the official guide: they save you from studying what is not tested.
The practice that covers the most objectives
Open an AWS account and do three things: create an IAM user with MFA and a least-privilege policy, set up a budget with an alert in AWS Budgets, and estimate a simple architecture in AWS Pricing Calculator. That touches objectives from domains 2 and 4 in one afternoon.
Then walk through the EC2, S3 and RDS consoles without launching anything expensive. The goal is not configuration but knowing what each service is for, which is what the exam asks.
How to use practice tests and mock exams
Start with the sample questions to measure your starting point. During weeks 1 to 3, practise each domain right after studying it and read the explanation for every miss, not just the correct answer.
In week 4, sit mock exams of 65 questions in 90 minutes. Book when you score above 80% on two in a row with questions you had not seen. You can start free with the CLF-C02 practice bank.
Frequent mistakes
Mixing up services with similar names: AWS CloudTrail records API calls, Amazon CloudWatch monitors and alerts, AWS Config audits configuration. The same happens with AWS Shield, AWS WAF and Amazon GuardDuty, or with Savings Plans and Reserved Instances.
Leaving questions blank: the guide states there is no penalty for guessing and unanswered questions count as incorrect. On multiple-response questions, the stem tells you how many options to pick; read it before the options.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to prepare for CLF-C02?
At 4 to 6 hours a week, about four weeks with some technical background and about six if you start from zero.
What score do I need to pass CLF-C02?
700 on a scale of 100 to 1,000. Scoring is compensatory, so you do not need to pass each domain separately.
Is there free official material for CLF-C02?
Yes. On AWS Skill Builder, the Exam Prep course, the 20-question Official Practice Question Set and basic AWS Cloud Quest are free. The Official Practice Exam needs a subscription.
Which CLF-C02 domain carries the most weight?
Cloud Technology and Services at 34%, followed by Security and Compliance at 30%.
Are wrong answers penalized on CLF-C02?
No. Wrong answers and unanswered questions count the same, so always answer.
