AI-300 earns Microsoft Certified: Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate: putting machine learning models into production and keeping them there on Azure Machine Learning, and doing the same for generative AI applications on Microsoft Foundry. It is a narrow, demanding certification, which is why whether it is worth it depends heavily on your job. Here is an honest assessment based on the official data, with no salary promises.
What exactly it certifies
According to the official profile, the candidate sets up infrastructure for machine learning operations (MLOps) and generative AI operations (GenAIOps) on Azure, which Microsoft collectively calls AI operations. That includes training, optimizing, deploying and maintaining traditional models with Azure Machine Learning, and deploying, evaluating, monitoring and optimizing generative AI applications and agents with Microsoft Foundry.
It is the natural successor to DP-100 (Azure Data Scientist Associate), retired in 2026, but not the same certification: DP-100 measured mostly data science, AI-300 measures operations. We compare them in AI-300 vs DP-100.
Who it makes sense for
Machine learning engineers and data scientists who already take models to production and want to certify the part a portfolio shows least: secure workspaces, registries, pipelines, progressive rollout, data drift and retraining. Also platform or DevOps engineers who have started serving AI teams and need to speak the language of MLflow, endpoints and evaluations.
And, increasingly, anyone operating generative AI applications: almost half of the outline (GenAIOps, quality and observability, RAG and fine-tuning optimization) is about Foundry, versioned prompts, automated evaluations, traces, token cost and RAG improvement. If your job is keeping an internal copilot working well without the bill exploding, AI-300 describes your day.
Who it is not for
If you build AI solutions with managed services (vision, language, search, agents) without training your own models, the certification that fits is AI-103, Azure AI Engineer Associate. If your work is analytics and visualization, PL-300. And if you want a first AI certification for a non-technical profile, look at the fundamentals ones.
It is also not worth doing for the title alone if you have no access to an Azure subscription to practise in. All five domains assume you have created a workspace, run jobs, deployed endpoints and configured evaluations in Foundry; without a lab, the outline stays abstract.
What the exam requires
Five domains: MLOps infrastructure (15–20%), model lifecycle and operations (25–30%), GenAIOps infrastructure (20–25%), generative AI quality and observability (10–15%) and optimizing generative AI systems (10–15%). Microsoft assumes Python experience, data science fundamentals and entry-level DevOps: GitHub Actions, the command line, Bicep and Azure CLI.
Exam facts: 120 minutes, proctored through Pearson VUE, English only, 700 out of 1,000 to pass, retake 24 hours after the first attempt. The price depends on the country. The certification expires after a year and renews free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Microsoft offers a free practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator, which requires signing in.
How to decide
Take a diagnostic test before committing: if in the model lifecycle domain you recognize what each piece is for (MLflow, AutoML, pipelines, endpoints, drift), the rest is a matter of practice in Foundry. If that domain reads like a list of names, you need a lab first, not an exam. You can measure yourself by domain on AI-300 free and without signing up.
If you go for it, the six-week plan and the outline by domain are written for someone with experience; if you are starting from zero in Azure ML, plan for twice as long.
Frequently asked questions
Which certification does AI-300 earn?
Microsoft Certified: Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate, intermediate level. Passing the AI-300 exam is enough.
AI-300 or AI-103?
AI-300 if you operate models and AI applications (MLOps and GenAIOps on Azure ML and Foundry). AI-103 if you build solutions with Azure AI services without training your own models. They are different roles and complement each other.
How long is AI-300 and which languages is it in?
120 minutes, English only according to the official page. If the exam is not in your language, Microsoft lets you request 30 extra minutes.
Does the AI-300 certification expire?
Yes, after a year. It renews free through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, with no exam retake.
