Before you start studying for AI-300 it helps to know what you are facing: how long it is, which language it is in, how it is scored, where to book it and what happens if you fail. Here is everything Microsoft publishes on the official exam page and study guide as of 23 September 2026, and what it does not publish.
Duration, scoring and format
The official page gives 120 minutes to complete the exam. It is proctored, and Microsoft notes it may include interactive components. Microsoft does not publish the exact number of AI-300 questions; its associate-level exams usually range from 40 to 60, with single and multiple choice, drag and drop, hotspot and sometimes case studies.
Scores run from 1 to 1,000 and 700 passes. It is a scaled score, not a percentage: 700 does not mean 70% correct. Before the exam you can try the interface in the official sandbox, which reproduces the question types without real content.
Language
AI-300 is offered in English only. Microsoft says that when an exam is not available in your preferred language you can request 30 additional minutes; it is requested as an accommodation when booking. Keep it in mind while preparing: practising the terminology in English (endpoint, datastore, groundedness, provisioned throughput) avoids losing time translating in your head.
Price and booking
The price is set by the country or region where the exam is proctored, so the Microsoft Learn page shows it when you book. Microsoft also notes that it excludes taxes and program discounts such as Microsoft Certified Trainer or partner pricing, and that it can change without notice: check the amount when you pay.
Booking is done from the exam page on Microsoft Learn, through Pearson VUE, at a test center or from home with online proctoring. Microsoft recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account rather than a work one: if you leave your company, the history on a corporate account is lost and cannot be recovered. There is also Exam Replay, an offer that includes a second attempt.
If you fail, and when it expires
After a first fail you can retake 24 hours later. From the second failed attempt on, the waiting time increases under Microsoft's retake policy. There is no published annual attempt limit for this exam, but each attempt is paid.
The Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate certification expires after a year, like every associate-level one. It renews free, with no exam retake, through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn that opens a few months before the expiry date. If you let it expire, you have to pass the exam again.
Official practice assessment and practice
Microsoft offers a free AI-300 practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator; you need to sign in to launch it. It is useful to learn the question style, not to cover the outline. To practise by domain with an explanation on every answer, start free with AI-300 on CertifyDeck, and check the outline by domain before booking a date.
