PL-300 (Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst) is passed with 700 points out of 1,000 and measures four domains: prepare the data, model the data, visualize and analyze, and manage and secure Power BI. The shortest route is to build a single report from start to finish: importing, cleaning, modeling, writing measures and publishing creates the connections that a course watched passively does not.
What to study first for PL-300
Start with Power Query and data quality, because a clean model simplifies DAX and visuals. Then master star schemas, relationships, the date table, filter context and measures. Finish with workspaces, scheduled refresh, row-level security (RLS), sensitivity labels and content distribution.
Microsoft's official guide splits the weight like this: prepare the data 25–30%, model the data 25–30%, visualize and analyze 25–30%, manage and secure Power BI 15–20%. Preparation and modeling together are more than half the exam, and they are where a weak foundation costs the most. The blocks are in the PL-300 study guide.
The minimum hands-on project
Use a sales dataset with several tables. Fix types and nulls in Power Query, create dimensions, mark a date table and write measures for sales, margin, year-to-date and comparison with the previous period. Design an executive page and a diagnostic page.
Publish the report, configure a refresh and apply RLS. Explain out loud why a measure responds to the filter and why a calculated column would not be the best choice: that reasoning is exactly what the exam asks.
A 30-day study plan
Spend ten days on preparation and modeling, seven on DAX, six on visualization and analysis, four on the Power BI service and security, and three on mock exams. Adjust the length to your level: the signal to slow down is failing filter context questions, not the calendar.
PL-300 questions and mock exams on CertifyDeck
On the PL-300 page practice is organized by domain, so you can work on DAX or modeling without repeating what you already control. Each explanation takes you back to the concept and the product; the PL-300 cheat sheet summarizes DAX functions and modeling decisions. Use the final mock exams to train timing and careful reading of the questions.
Frequently asked questions
What is the passing score for PL-300?
700 points out of 1,000.
Which domain weighs most in PL-300?
Three are tied at 25–30%: prepare the data, model the data and visualize and analyze. Manage and secure Power BI is 15–20%.
How much DAX do I need to pass PL-300?
Enough to write measures with CALCULATE, time intelligence functions and basic iterators, and to explain why a measure behaves differently from a calculated column. Advanced optimization DAX is not required.
