The fastest route to AB-900 is not memorizing portals. You need to match each administration requirement to the right object, control or report and understand how Copilot respects Microsoft 365 permissions and governance.
Check your starting point
Be able to distinguish users, groups, teams, sites, libraries, mailboxes and distribution groups. Know which admin center owns each object and how licenses, roles and permissions affect access.
Review authentication, authorization, SSO, MFA, Conditional Access, risky sign-ins and least privilege. AB-900 is a fundamentals exam, but distractors often name a real tool intended for a different requirement.
Spend most time on data and governance
The largest domain covers sensitivity labels, classification, retention, DLP, insider risk, Communication Compliance, Compliance Manager, eDiscovery and DSPM for AI. Build a problem-to-tool map and record which portal or explorer confirms each finding.
Understand that Copilot grounds responses through Microsoft Graph within the user's effective access. It does not repair excessive permissions: overshared SharePoint content can become easier to discover. Practice data access governance reports and restricted access control.
Learn Copilot and agents through scenarios
Compare monthly licensing with pay-as-you-go, built-in capabilities with custom agents, and Researcher with Analyst. Then practice license assignment, billing policies, adoption reporting and prompt management.
For agents, identify user access, creation and approval, and what to monitor in the Microsoft 365 and Power Platform admin centers. The goal is selecting the right control, not building complex integrations.
A four-week plan
Week one: objects, admin centers, licensing and SharePoint. Week two: Entra, Zero Trust, Defender XDR, audit and PIM. Week three: Purview, data risks and oversharing. Week four: Copilot, agents, mock exams and error review.
Practice by domain after each block and save full mock exams for the final week. You are ready when you can justify both the correct choice and why every alternative misses the requirement.
Frequently asked questions
How long does AB-900 preparation take?
With basic Microsoft 365 experience, two to four weeks can be realistic. Allow four to six weeks if Entra and Purview are new to you.
Do I need coding skills for AB-900?
No. It is an administration fundamentals exam focused on objects, permissions, controls and monitoring rather than code-based extension.
Which domain should I study first?
Start with Microsoft 365 objects and core security, then place the greatest effort on data protection and governance, the highest-weighted domain.
