Associate Cloud Engineer is the Google Cloud certification for people who deploy and run workloads on the platform every day. It is not a concepts exam: it asks about gcloud, IAM, GKE, VPC networks and billing. Here is what it validates, who it pays off for and how to decide whether it is your next step.
What it certifies
According to the official profile, an Associate Cloud Engineer deploys and secures applications, services and infrastructure, monitors the operations of multiple projects and maintains enterprise solutions so they meet performance targets. Experience with public clouds or on-premises environments is expected.
In practice, the exam checks whether you can do the everyday platform tasks: create projects and link them to billing, grant IAM roles, launch VMs and GKE clusters, deploy to Cloud Run, build VPCs with firewall rules and read logs. The official page adds that these tasks are supported by AI tooling, but the outline is still about operations.
Who it makes sense for
It pays off if you work, or are about to work, as a system administrator, cloud engineer, DevOps engineer or developer who deploys on Google Cloud. It is also a good first technical Google Cloud certification if you come from another cloud and want to prove you know the console and gcloud.
If your company runs on Google Cloud and you do not hold any certification for the platform yet, this is the one closest to daily work. The Professional certifications are the next step, not the first one.
Who it is not for
If your role is business, product or management and you need to discuss generative AI with sound judgement, Generative AI Leader fits better and does not require using the console.
If your company uses another cloud, prepare its equivalent: on AWS, CLF-C02 as a foundation or SAA-C03 if you design architectures; on Azure, AZ-900 to start or AZ-104 as the operations counterpart. The full list is in the catalog.
What the exam requires
It has 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions in 2 hours, in English, Japanese, Spanish or Portuguese. It costs $125 plus applicable tax, is taken online-proctored or at a test center, and the certification lasts 3 years.
Google does not publish a passing score: you only get pass or fail. The official outline is split into five sections, with deployment as the heaviest block.
| Section | Approximate weight | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Setting up a cloud solution environment | ~20% | Resource hierarchy, organization policies, project IAM, Cloud Identity, APIs, quotas, billing accounts, budgets and exports |
| 2. Planning and configuring a cloud solution | ~17.5% | Choosing compute (Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run, Cloud Functions), storage and databases, load balancing and Network Service Tiers |
| 3. Deploying and implementing a cloud solution | ~25% | VMs and managed instance groups, GKE clusters, Cloud Run, data products, VPC and firewall rules, infrastructure as code |
| 4. Ensuring successful operation of a cloud solution | ~20% | Snapshots and images, node pools, Cloud Run traffic, Cloud Storage lifecycle, subnets, Cloud DNS and Cloud NAT, Monitoring and Logging |
| 5. Configuring access and security | ~17.5% | IAM policies, basic, predefined and custom roles, service accounts, impersonation and short-lived credentials |

How to decide: a one-afternoon diagnostic
Do two things. First, read the official exam guide and mark every point as "done it", "read about it" or "no idea". If more than half lands in the third column, plan for a longer schedule and plenty of labs.
Second, answer some sample questions and look at where you miss. If you miss mostly on IAM, service accounts and networking, that is where your work is. The outline with explanations is in the study guide, and when you want to practise question by question per section, start free.
