On 15 September 2026 Microsoft announced that the Microsoft Certified: Azure Cosmos DB Developer Specialty certification changes name and level: from 6 October 2026 it will be Microsoft Certified: Azure Cosmos DB AI Developer Associate. On the same day a new outline takes effect for the exam, which keeps the DP-420 code but changes a lot of content. This article summarizes what changes with the official study guide in hand.
What changes on 6 October
Two things at once. The certification changes name and level: from Microsoft Certified: Azure Cosmos DB Developer Specialty to Microsoft Certified: Azure Cosmos DB AI Developer Associate. Microsoft explains that the Azure Cosmos DB developer role has expanded toward cloud-native applications and AI experiences, and that the name and level should reflect it.
And the exam is updated the same day. The code does not change, it is still DP-420, but the study guide already titles it Building AI Applications with Azure Cosmos DB and publishes the outline dated 6 October 2026, with a change log that rates the audience profile update as major.
For current holders, the official page is clear: no action is required. The name and level update automatically on the transcript and renewal stays the same, with the free annual assessment on Microsoft Learn.
The new outline by domain
Design and develop database solutions (40–45%): consistency levels, request units and throughput, account and container settings, SDK clients; operations (parameterized queries, paging, point reads, patch, bulk and transactional operations, TTL, concurrency control); data models and partitioning (hierarchical partition keys, synthetic keys, multi-tenant patterns, anti-patterns); change feed (processor versus pull mode, lease containers, all versions and deletes mode, copy container jobs); and, new, AI-assisted tools with the Agent Kit.
Secure, optimize and deploy (30–35%): authentication, authorization, network security and dynamic data masking; backup and restore, multi-region reads and writes, partition failover; query and index performance, end-to-end latency, Azure Monitor alerts and diagnostic logs in Log Analytics; and fleet management with fleet-level throughput and analytics across accounts and subscriptions.
Implement AI and analytics capabilities (20–25%): full-text search, vector data and indexes, vector partitioning and sharded DiskANN, vector and hybrid search, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG); agent memory stores (durable memory, conversation state, semantic memory); and operational analytics with Microsoft Fabric: choosing between Azure Cosmos DB and Cosmos DB in Fabric, mirroring, T-SQL and Spark queries over mirrored data and the Spark connector.
What leaves the exam
The change log marks several blocks of the previous outline as removed: server-side programming with JavaScript (stored procedures, triggers and user-defined functions), implementing data movement, the DevOps process for an Azure Cosmos DB solution, integration with other services as its own block and multi-region write as a separate area, now absorbed into the availability and recovery block.
The audience profile changes too. Before, you were expected to read C# or Java code and create server-side objects with JavaScript; now you are expected to have experience developing with C# or Python and to be familiar with generative AI concepts and retrieval-based systems.
What to do depending on your situation
If your exam is booked before 6 October 2026, the previous outline applies. If you book it for after, study with the new guide: the AI and analytics part is a quarter of the exam and did not exist before.
The exam is offered in ten languages and lasts 100 minutes according to the certification page. Microsoft updates the English version first and localized versions about eight weeks later, so the localized versions of the new outline would arrive around early December 2026, with no confirmed date.
CertifyDeck does not have a DP-420 bank. If your goal is AI development on Azure, the closest developer certification in our catalog is AI-103, Azure AI Engineer Associate, with AI-103 questions by domain.
Frequently asked questions
Does the exam code change?
No. It is still DP-420. What changes on 6 October 2026 is the exam title (Building AI Applications with Azure Cosmos DB), the outline and the certification's name and level.
I hold the Azure Cosmos DB Developer Specialty certification. Do I lose it?
No. It remains valid. On 6 October 2026 the name and level update automatically on your transcript to Azure Cosmos DB AI Developer Associate and renewal is the same as always.
How much does AI weigh on the new exam?
The AI and analytics domain weighs 20–25%: vector, full-text and hybrid search, RAG, agent memory and analytics with Microsoft Fabric. The design domain also includes using the Agent Kit.
