AI-500: the expert multi-agent exam that requires AI-103

Microsoft has added an expert level to its AI development path: Microsoft Certified: Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert, with exam AI-500. It has been in beta since July, Microsoft announces general availability for October 2026, and it has a requirement that changes the order of study: besides passing AI-500 you must hold the AI-103 certification.

1

What AI-500 is and who it is for

AI-500 validates the ability to design, build and operate production-ready AI solutions in which several agents work together. Microsoft aims it at expert-level practitioners who own the whole lifecycle, from architecture to deployment and optimization, and who work with developers, machine learning engineers, platform engineers and business stakeholders.

The exam page asks for experience developing AI and machine learning solutions, deploying agentic systems in production and orchestrating agent logic with Microsoft Foundry, plus proficiency in Python and in Azure compute, network, storage and data services.

2

The requirement: hold AI-103 first

The official announcement states it explicitly: to earn Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert you must also have earned Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate, the certification for exam AI-103. Microsoft explains that AI-103 provides the Foundry and agent development foundation that AI-500 extends with multi-agent design, orchestration, governance and optimization.

In practice, AI-103 is the first step on this path. If you already hold it, AI-500 is the natural continuation. If not, start there: see the AI-103 outline, the plan to pass it and practise with the AI-103 questions.

3

AI-500 outline by domain

Architect multi-agent solutions (15–20%): decomposing goals into workflows, agents and tools, defining personas, boundaries and autonomy levels, communication protocols, short-term and long-term memory, and the identity, persistence, compute and observability components.

Develop multi-agent solutions in Azure (30–35%): advanced prompt engineering, memory and context management, multi-agent RAG, MCP servers and clients with Azure Functions, Logic Apps and API Management, and orchestration patterns such as hub-and-spoke, sequential, parallel and orchestrator-subagent, with frameworks like Agent Framework, LangChain and LangGraph.

Evaluate, optimize and monitor (20–25%): evaluations and human review in Foundry, diagnosing context window issues, token usage, cost and tracing. And secure, govern and deploy (20–25%): identity-based access, authentication flows, Azure Key Vault, guardrails over inputs, tool calls and outputs, and release strategies with CI/CD.

Dates and beta status

Microsoft announced AI-500 on 22 July 2026 and, in that same announcement, sets general availability of the certification for October 2026, without a specific day. The discount offer for early beta candidates ended on 5 August.

While the exam is in beta the score is not immediate: Microsoft rescores when the exam goes live and releases results about ten days later. There is no official practice assessment yet either. The exam page lists English as the only language and does not publish a duration or a number of questions.

5

How it fits with AI-103 and AI-300

AI-103 is about building apps and agents with Microsoft Foundry; AI-500 is about making many agents work together reliably, securely and at a controlled cost. AI-300, in turn, covers machine learning and generative AI operations and shares with AI-500 the concern for evaluation, observability and deployment.

CertifyDeck does not have an AI-500 question bank. If that certification is your goal, what you can get ahead on today is AI-103, which is mandatory to earn it; and if you come from the operations side, AI-300 covers part of the evaluation and deployment ground.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to earn the AI-500 certification?

Pass exam AI-500 and also hold Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate, which is earned with exam AI-103. Microsoft's official announcement states this.

When will AI-500 be generally available?

Microsoft announces general availability for October 2026, without a specific day. Until then the exam is in beta and the score arrives after rescoring.

Do I need to code for AI-500?

Yes. The exam page asks for Python proficiency and experience deploying agentic systems in production, plus familiarity with Microsoft Agent Framework, Model Context Protocol, RAG and LangGraph.

Is AI-500 available in other languages?

Not for now. The exam page lists English as the only language.

Where do I start if I do not hold AI-103?

With AI-103. It is mandatory for the expert certification and covers the Microsoft Foundry and agent development foundation that AI-500 builds on.
