On 1 September 2026 AWS announced AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (code AIB-C01), a new certification for people who decide on, champion and scale AI initiatives without building them. The exam is in beta: registration opened on 1 September and delivery began on 29 September, in English and Japanese, for USD 50 instead of the USD 100 standard price. If you earn it by 15 February 2027, you also get an Early Adopter badge.
What AIB-C01 is and who it is for
AIB-C01 validates that you can turn AI capabilities into business outcomes: choose which use cases deserve investment, build a credible business case, measure the return, put governance in place and take a pilot enterprise-wide. The exam guide sums it up: strategic decision-making takes priority over technical implementation.
The target candidate works alongside technical teams but does not build the solutions. AWS lists product and program managers, sales and business development, line-of-business leaders, consultants, business analysts and marketing professionals. If you are the one asked whether an AI project gets funded, paused or stopped, this certification describes your job.
The official page draws the line with AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) clearly: AIF-C01 validates foundational knowledge of AI, machine learning, generative AI and AWS AI services; AIB-C01 validates business judgment and does not assess knowledge of AWS services. Services appear as context in the scenarios, not as the subject. You can hold both, and AWS presents them as complementary.
Dates, price and format
Beta registration opened on 1 September 2026 and exams have been delivered since 29 September, at a Pearson test center or online with a proctor. It costs USD 50, half the USD 100 of the standard version. AWS does not publish the beta closing date; its general policy says betas usually run for 1 to 3 months, and as of 2 November this one has been running for five weeks. If you want the reduced price, do not leave it until January.
The beta has 85 questions and 170 minutes. Questions are multiple choice (one correct answer and three distractors) or multiple response (two or more correct answers out of five or more options, scored only if you select all of them). Unanswered questions count as wrong and there is no penalty for guessing, so leave nothing blank.
Scores run from 100 to 1,000 and you need 700 to pass. The model is compensatory: you do not need to pass each domain, only the overall exam. A beta gives you one attempt: if you fail, you wait for the standard version to retake. Results arrive within 5 business days and the certification stays active for 3 years.
If you take the exam in English and it is not your first language, request the ESL +30 accommodation in your AWS Certification account before booking: it adds 30 minutes and applies to all your future exams.

What the exam measures: the four domains
AI Strategy and Business Value Creation (28%) is the largest domain. It asks you to identify high-impact use cases, make build-buy-partner decisions, prioritize initiatives (scale, pause or terminate), recognize when AI is not the answer, define tangible and intangible KPIs, set baseline metrics before rollout and calculate ROI. The AWS blog gives the example of a vendor proposing a USD 2 million deployment: you need to tell whether the investment is sound, premature or missing critical success factors.
AI Fundamentals and Literacy (24%) covers concepts in a business context: AI versus machine learning versus generative AI, structured and unstructured data, data quality, when rule-based automation is enough, what sets an AI agent apart, model drift, prompt engineering, context windows and techniques such as RAG and fine-tuning. It also includes classifying tools (approved, blocked, under evaluation) to curb shadow AI and knowing frameworks such as ISO/IEC 42001.
AI Governance and Responsible AI Leadership (24%) deals with responsible AI principles and their tradeoffs against business goals, human oversight, governance bodies, regulatory compliance, risk classification, bias across the lifecycle, intellectual property and hallucinations. Business Readiness, Leadership, and AI Transformation (24%) closes with organizational readiness and maturity, data and infrastructure, change management, centers of excellence and the phased move from pilot to production.
On the AWS side, the in-scope list is short and basic: Amazon Bedrock, Amazon SageMaker AI, Amazon Quick, the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework, the shared responsibility model, AI service pricing models, AWS Pricing Calculator, AWS Cost Explorer and AWS Marketplace. Knowing what each offers at a business level is enough; configuring them is out of scope.
How to prepare if you come from AIF-C01 or another AI certification
Start with the [official AIB-C01 exam guide](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/aws-certification/latest/ai-business-strategist-01/ai-business-strategist-01.html) and the [exam page](https://aws.amazon.com/certification/certified-ai-business-strategist/). AWS Skill Builder has digital courses for the role, 13 modules mapped to the four domains, and an exam prep plan with the official Practice Question Set and walk-through questions. If you already have experience, AWS suggests going straight to the prep plan.
If you have prepared for or passed AIF-C01, you have much of domain 1 covered, but only that. What weighs most here is strategy, ROI, governance and change management, which AIF-C01 barely touches. Practice with scenarios: given a business case, which KPIs would you set, which risk would stall the project, when would you stop it? CertifyDeck's AIF-C01 questions help you lock in the base of AI concepts plus Bedrock and SageMaker AI, and you can start free; they do not cover the strategy and transformation domains.
If you come from Google Cloud, Generative AI Leader is the closest exam in approach: it is also aimed at business profiles. The Generative AI Leader questions go over generative AI vocabulary that comes back in domain 1. And if you lack an AWS cloud foundation, AWS suggests AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner as a next step; you have CLF-C02 questions to practice it.
One last practical tip: since the beta allows one attempt and there is no Official Practice Exam yet, book when you are getting the Practice Question Set right, not before.
Frequently asked questions
When can I take AIB-C01?
Now: the beta has been delivered since 29 September 2026 and registration opened on 1 September. AWS does not publish when the beta closes or when the standard version arrives; its betas usually run for 1 to 3 months.
How much does it cost?
USD 50 for the beta and USD 100 for the standard version, excluding tax. The amount in local currency depends on the exchange rates AWS publishes on its pricing page.
Which languages is it available in?
The beta is in English and Japanese. AWS announces more languages at general availability but does not publish the list. If English is not your first language, request the ESL +30 accommodation for 30 extra minutes.
Is it a new certification, or does it replace AIF-C01?
It is new and replaces nothing. AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) remains available and validates foundational technical knowledge of AI and AWS services; AIB-C01 validates business judgment. You do not need AIF-C01 or any other certification first.
Do I need to code or use the AWS console?
No. The guide excludes coding models, data engineering, deploying pipelines and administering AWS services. Knowing at a business level what services such as Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker AI offer is enough.
What happens if I fail the beta?
An AWS beta allows only one attempt. If you fail, you wait for the standard version to retake. If you pass, you hold the same certification as with the standard version, active for 3 years.
What is the Early Adopter badge?
An additional digital badge for anyone who earns the certification by 15 February 2027, on top of the certification badge itself.
Does CertifyDeck have AIB-C01 questions?
Not yet: AIB-C01 is not in the CertifyDeck catalog. You do have AIF-C01 questions and Generative AI Leader questions, which you can start free and which cover the base of AI concepts, but not the AIB-C01 strategy, governance and transformation domains.
