How long does it take to prepare for the PL-400 exam?
"How much do I need to study?" doesn't have a single answer — it depends almost entirely on how much real code you've already written against Power Platform. Here are three realistic scenarios instead of a magic number.
Scenario 1: you already work daily with Dataverse and code
If your current job involves writing plug-ins, custom connectors, or regularly consuming the Web API, the exam largely tests things you already do. A focused 4-6 week review — targeting specific gaps like ALM, PCF if you don't use it daily, or Azure Functions — is usually enough.
Scenario 2: you're coming from the maker/functional side
If you're strong with Power Apps and Power Automate as a maker but don't code daily, the long pole isn't learning Power Platform — it's building up enough C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, and Azure knowledge to genuinely understand plug-ins and PCF components, not just memorize them. Planning for 8-12 weeks is realistic, with at least part of that time spent writing your own code, not just reading about it.
Scenario 3: experienced developer, new to Power Platform
If you're a solid programmer but have never touched Dataverse, the learning curve sits in the platform-specific concepts: the plug-in event pipeline, the security model, ALM with solutions, DLP. 6 to 10 weeks is usually enough, prioritizing hands-on practice over passive reading.
